Quarterly Estimated Tax for Fellowship Recipients
This Personal Finance for PhDs workshop is provided to you for free by the the Council of Graduate Students at Michigan State University.

This workshop is for US citizens, permanent residents, and residents for tax purposes who are not having federal income tax withheld from their paychecks.

If that describes you, you may be responsible for making manual tax payments to the IRS up to four times per year. Filling out the Estimated Tax Worksheet in IRS Form 1040-ES will tell you whether payments are required and in what amount.

This workshop walks you through how to fill out each line of the Estimated Tax Worksheet—or take a shortcut if you're so inclined. It also addresses the common special scenarios graduate students, postdocs, and postbacs face, such as switching on to or off of fellowship mid-calendar year and being married to someone who has automatic income tax withholding.
